Walk into this workshop, pick up a charcoal or graphite stick and get a chance to exhibit your masterpiece at the Romania Pavilion. Visitors can experience a unique human experience not found anywhere else around the Expo 2020 Dubai site at the pavilion’s Tradition Reloaded workshop, according to Romanian artist and sculptor Daniel Rădulescu.

Throughout November, Rădulescu will offer visitors a chance to replicate famous sculptures from Romania with charcoal and graphite. Individuals can then display their work – personalised with either a signature or the name of their own country – at the pavilion.

Rădulescu said: “I have been to many pavilions, which are amazing.... You are very human here [at the Romania Pavilion]. You can touch, you can get your hands dirty, you can interact. You see people. You see emotions. A couple of people [who participated in the workshop] were actually very emotional. It is incredible to see so many hands from so many countries contribute.”

Sustainability and the responsible use of resources is a major theme in the artworks of the selected artists. Rădulescu uses three welding techniques to melt steel – which can be infinitely recycled without losing its quality – and creates powerful artworks that are a metaphor of a synergy of human states, emotions and feelings. Rădulescu said: “Sustainability is very important [to my artwork]. For example, steel is 100 per cent recyclable. We [are also using] natural charcoal [at the workshop]. It’s a very incredible technique to draw with. Even Michelangelo, his first [sketch for] the Sistine Chapel [ceiling] was done with charcoal.”
