Imagine living in a place where, in the winter, temperatures average -14 degrees Celsius and where 21 hours of the day are spent in complete darkness.

A population of 500 people actually do live in such frigid conditions, in the village of Oymyakon, in the Yakutia region of Russia. The village is considered to be the coldest permanently occupied human settlement in the world. The coldest temperature recorded there was in 2013, when the mercury dipped to -72 degrees Celsius!
According to a 2018 report in US-based Fortune magazine, despite these extreme conditions, fish markets in the village remain open and people ride their bicycles and even go swimming. But they do have to make some adjustments, like leaving their cars running all the time so that their batteries don’t die.
Most villagers are also used to eating raw or frozen meat. Since uncooked meat takes a much longer time to digest than cooked meat, they are able to keep their body relatively warm with active digestive processes, even in the most frigid climate.
But as adaptable and resourceful as humans are, we cannot survive the absolute coldest uninhabited place on Earth. This title goes to Antarctica, of course, specifically east Antarctica, where scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Centre measured the lowest temperature ever recorded: -92 degrees Celsius.
Humans could survive in such bitter cold – but only for about three minutes. According to the National Geographic website, a windchill of -45 degrees Celsius can cause frostbite in just five minutes. So, it’s clear that we have no place being there.
