Diabetes is a chronic disease with the potential of affecting all organs and organ systems. About 15 per cent of Dubai’s population are diabetic. An additional 16 per cent are considered prediabetic, a condition characterised
by slightly elevated blood glucose levels.

Prediabetics are at an increased risk of developing diabetes within a few years. It is of critical importance to know about this risk and consider all possible measures to avoid or at least delay the onset of fully developed diabetes.

People with prediabetes usually don’t have symptoms. This is why 90 per cent of affected people do not even know about their risk.

For this reason diabetic screening is recommended by scientific societies every three to five years for all adults, beginning from the age of 45. Obese patients, women with gestational diabetes during pregnancy and patients with positive history of diabetes in their families are at higher risk of becoming diabetic.

The most important action prediabetics should take is to focus on healthy lifestyle changes: follow a healthy diet and regular physical activity, reduce weight and refrain from smoking. Careful attention to food choices, regular activity and, most importantly, weight loss can eventually reverse the disease and reduce the risk of diabetes.

Lifestyle changes

A moderate reduction of the body weight, by 5-7 per cent, reduces the risk of diabetes significantly. However, it is difficult to sustain the weight loss over a longer period.

Attending continuous diabetes prevention programmes or participating in self-help groups makes lifestyle changes enjoyable and long-term outcomes more successful.
