Dubai: Abu Dhabi police has reminded motorists that driving below 120km/h on a stretch of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road on certain lanes can lead to a fine for slow driving, after new speed limits were introduced last year.
The police authority also clarified on which lanes you need to maintain a minimum speed limit, in order to avoid a fine of Dh400.
Last year, several routes in the UAE had new speed limits introduced, in order to control the flow of traffic.
Here are all the updates that you should be aware of.
1. Sweihan Road – Maximum speed limit reduced to 120km/h
From June 4, 2023, the maximum speed limit on a six-kilometre stretch on Sweihan Road was reduced from 140km/h to 120km/h.
Abu Dhabi police said that the revised speed applies on the road from Al Falah Bridge, in the direction of the Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Fines start from Dh300 and can go up to Dh3,000, with the vehicle being impounded if you are violating the speed limit by more than 60km/h.

2. Two lanes on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road – minimum speed limit 120km/h
If you are driving down E11 in Abu Dhabi, the two lanes from the left also have a minimum speed limit – 120 km/h. From May 1, 2023, Abu Dhabi Police introduced a fine of Dh400 for drivers violating the minimum speed limit requirement on the first two lanes from the left.
On January 29, 2024, the police authority once again reminded motorists of the need to drive above 120km/h if you are on the fast lanes.
"Drivers and road users driving at least than 120km/h will be issued a violation of 'driving a vehicle at a speed less than the minimum speed specified for the road, if any', with a valued of Dh400," the post read.
"The third and last lanes, whose speed is set at 140km/h, are permitted to be used by heavy vehciles and will not be subject to minimum speed violations," the post clarified.
As reported by Gulf News earlier, the new speed limits aim to enhance road safety, and encourage slower vehicles and heavy vehicles to use the lanes on the right.
3. Dubai-Hatta Road (E44) – Maximum speed limit reduced to 80km/h
Since January 1, 2023, the maximum speed limit on a six-kilometre stretch on the Dubai-Hatta Road was also reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h. The change in speed limit is applicable on the sector extending between Dubai, Ajman and the Al Hosn Roundabout.
The speed limit signs have been updated accordingly and red line markings on the road have also been introduced to alert drivers.
According to an announcement by Ajman Police on January 26, 2023, the speed limit has been reduced on Dubai-Hatta Street in the Masfout area in Ajman.
