UAE RESIDENTS SOAK UP THE FESTIVITIES, MIXING CAUTION WITH IMPROVISATION As the UAE celebrates Eid Al Fitr, along with the rest of the world, residents here are trying to make the most of a long weekend with friends and family, while complying with COVID-19 protocol. Avoiding large gatherings, people are mostly joining in the festivities in smaller groups, as stipulated by the authorities, with some expatriates catching up with friends and family back home on video calls. These are exceptional times, given the pandemic, and mixing caution with improvisation, it is heartening to see that UAE residents are making sure to soak up the fun without crossing the red line of the preventive measures put in place to keep a dreaded virus at bay. JOHNSON ‘ANXIOUS’ AS INDIAN COVID-19 VARIANT DOUBLES Just when Britain thought it was getting COVID-19 under control, Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted he is worried about the spread of a variant from India which has seen a sharp rise in the number of confirmed cases. The cases of the B.1.617.2 variant currently stand at 1,313 and that is more than double of the previous week. “We are anxious about it, it has been spreading,” Johnson said. “There’s a range of things we could do. We’re ruling nothing out.” With restrictions easing across much of the UK from 17 May everyone is hoping the vaccines will continue to break the link between cases and hospitalisations and deaths so that another lockdown can be avoided. SOCIAL MEDIA CAN HAUNT YOU Caleb Kennedy, a 16-year-old finalist on ‘American Idol’, has been booted from the show after a controversial old video of the singer did the rounds on social media. In it, he’s seated next to someone who wears a white sheet in the style of a KKK hood. Another celebrity, Chrissy Teigen, got into trouble after old social media posts harassing a TV star were unearthed. “I’m mortified and sad at who I used to be,” Teigen tweeted in her apology. These incidents showcase how permanent social media posts are and how they can come back to bite you years later. However, being kind, careful and smart with what you post on social media is the most important lesson here. (COMMENT BY Jennifer Barretto, Assistant Editor – Features)

KLOPP’S MEN IN LAST-DITCH PUSH FOR TOP FOUR FINISH The Premier League title may have been decided earlier this week, but Liverpool breathed new life into the league and their top-four push with a thrilling 4-2 win in the rearranged fixture away against Manchester United. After anti-Glazer protestors got into the ground and onto the pitch 11 days ago, further demonstrations could not stop last night’s marquee fixture going ahead in Old Trafford’s final match behind closed doors. United, set to finish second, missed this chance to all but end Reds’ Champions League qualification hopes as their fourth match in eight days ended in a first home loss to their bitter rivals since 2014.
