‘CODE RED FOR HUMANITY’: A RUDE WAKE UP CALL: We have seen it during the past few months. The deadly wildfires and floods across continents. Even Siberia has been hit by unprecedented forest fires. And the United Nations yesterday sounded a ‘code red for humanity.’ No area is safe. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, the 3,000-plus-page report from 234 scientists, said. The reason is us: Humans have pushed the climate into ‘unprecedented’ territory. From warming oceans to more extreme weather, scientists detailed a world rapidly altered, with worse impacts likely to come unless green-house gas pollution falls dramatically. “It’s just guaranteed that it’s going to get worse,’’ the report said. But the good news is it is still possible for us to forestall the most dire impacts. Over 100 countries have made informal pledges to achieve “net zero’’ human-caused carbon dioxide emissions around mid-century. The report said those commitments are essential. The message is loud and clear and the ball now is in our court. [COMMENT BY: Stephen N R, Senior Associate Editor]

ANTICIPATION BUILDS UP AT PSG HOME FOR MESSI’S ARRIVAL: The air is thick with anticipation as Paris Saint-Germain supporters have been gathering outside the club’s Parc des Princes home in anticipation of the arrival of Lionel Messi, football’s reigning deity, after his emotional Barcelona departure at the weekend. They looked set to add the 34-year-old Argentine to a squad that already includes Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Journalists from AFP TV on Monday spotted him still at his home near Barcelona alongside his family as well as his friend and former teammate Luis Suarez, though French media later reported that he had left for Ibiza to hold discussions with the Parisian club. Brace for the formal announcement soon. [COMMENT BY: Gautam Bhattacharyya, Senior Associate Editor]

A NEW WORLD AWAITS: Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is an icon in his own right. His movies are some of the best in the industry — spectacles of light, colour, dance and more. Now, he’s set to make the switch to digital with a new series for Netflix. While purists might feel he’s selling out to streaming, for the director who’s been in the industry for 25 years, this will be a chance to reinvent his art and adapt to new trends. As long as the project retains Bhansali’s essence, it’s sure to be a hit. [COMMENT BY: Jennifer Barretto, Assistant Editor – Features]
