PRIORITISE CIVILIAN PROTECTION IN ISRAEL-GAZA WAR: In the wake of the recent tragic events Israel and Gaza with over a thousand lives lost, including dozens of children, and thousands injured, the primary focus of the international community must be to minimise civilian casualties. Both the civilian population in Israel and Palestine deserve full protection under international humanitarian law. It is crucial to de-escalate and prevent further violence, as highlighted by the UAE in a recent statement. The international community must work together to avert broader instability and involvement by other groups, ensuring that ongoing regional efforts for dialogue, cooperation, and coexistence are not derailed. Urgent de-escalation efforts and a return to negotiations for a two-state solution are imperative to provide both Palestinians and Israelis the opportunity to live in peace and dignity. INDIA’S WIN OVER AUSTRALIA HAD THE RIGHT MIX FOR A CLASSIC THRILLER: Different pitches at different venues make cricket interesting and add that with the prevailing conditions to spice up the contest. This is exactly what transpired between India and Australia in the World Cup contest in Chennai on Sunday. When the bowlers get enough purchase from the pitch and the even contest between the bat and the ball make the contests even better. Therefore, when the teams play in Australia, England and South Africa, the pacers are in charge, while the spinners dominate in sub-continent conditions. On the whole, the low-scoring match at Chepauk had all the ingredients of a classic thriller with the match swinging both ways before the Men in Blue outwitted the five-time champions for their first World Cup win at the venue, where the second Tied Test was played. There were not many fours and sixes. Still the fans had their money’s worth. The aggression, disappointment and celebration all were in the right mix to make it a real drama. More such contests will make the One-Day Internationals interesting and entertaining. (By A.K.S. SATISH, Sports Editor)

SHAH RUKH KHAN, A SOFT TARGET? The decision to beef up Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan's security to Y+ after he reportedly received death threats brings back memories of a similar situation with Bollywood producer Rakesh Roshan in 2000. Roshan was shot outside his office; allegedly because of the success of his son Hrithik's debut film ‘Kaho Naa … Pyaar Hai’. Fast forward to 2023 where Khan is now facing death threats after the stupendous blockbuster success of 'Pathaan' and 'Jawan, it almost feels like history is repeating itself. It's also stark reminder of the real-world risks that sometimes accompany Bollywood success. The Maharashtra government's move to bump up protection with armed, trained bodyguards seems like a precautionary measure, a nod to the fact that celebrities aren't immune to bodily harm. In the glitzy world of showbiz, it's a harsh reality check that fame sometimes comes with a price, and security upgrades are just part of the package. For all those wondering who’s paying for the additional state security, it’s the actor himself, according to several reports. While we hope Khan, one of India’s biggest cultural exports, is safe and sound, burdening the tax-payer isn’t wholly fair either. So it’s heartening to know that Khan has stepped up on that front too. (By Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Entertainment Editor)
