UAE URGES GLOBAL ACTION IN GAZA: The UAE's resolute support for the Palestinian cause is a resounding call to action, urging the global community to transcend conflict management and strive for a genuine two-state solution. Through its UN Mission, the UAE underscored the prolonged suffering of Palestinians under occupation, advocating for their right to a secure, stable future like any other populace. The examples of children seeking education, not shelter, and young individuals building a nation, not searching through rubble - emphasises the urgency for a lasting resolution. The impassioned plea not only stresses the immediacy of the situation but also highlights the moral obligation to work collectively towards a future where Palestinians can flourish, emphasising peace, stability, and the promise of opportunity. LANDMARK DECISION: In a landmark decision, a UAE court has taken a significant step towards decriminalising debt-related issues. The ruling by the Dubai Court of Cassation eliminates the risk of debtors, whether individuals or businesses, being arrested for failing to meet their payment obligations. This applies to a wide range of debts, including personal loans, business loans, and credit card dues. Individuals who acted as guarantors for loans taken by someone else will not face criminal charges if the debtor defaults. This judgement marks a significant shift, and aligns with the government's ongoing reforms related to bounced cheque offences. Now, jail for debtors will only occur if certain conditions are met, such as proven financial capability (wealth), evidence of fund smuggling or concealment, or the debtor's cessation of debt repayments, provided that the cessation is not due to new circumstances affecting their ability to pay. This ruling is part of the UAE's broader efforts to decriminalise debt-related issues, promote economic stability and support responsible lending. (By Jay Hilotin, Senior Assistant Editor)

SRI LANKA AND BANGLADESH HAVE LET THEIR FANS DOWN: The World Cup serves as a platform to showcase talent, yet sadly, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, both Test-playing nations, failed to meet expectations and displayed a disappointing performance. In contrast, the Netherlands, an Associate Nation, and Afghanistan exceeded expectations, earning widespread acclaim. Although Sri Lanka is in a rebuilding phase, their victory against defending champions England was overshadowed by a dismal 55 all-out defeat to India. This inconsistency cannot be solely blamed on inexperience, as the team possesses several match-winners, but they seem to lack the temperament to navigate challenging conditions. Bangladesh, with just one win, faced substantial losses. While the Sri Lankan team exhibited occasional strength, the Tigers failed to show their prowess in this tournament, deeply disappointing their global fanbase. (By A.K.S. SATISH, Sports Editor)
