GLOBAL COVID CASES SOAR: More than 30.35 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 947,400 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

TRAIN DERAILS NEAR MUMBAI, INDIA: One coach of a local train derailed near Atgaon station, about 95 kms from Mumbai, India early on Saturday, but there was no report of injury to any passenger, an official said. Atgaon station is located in neighbouring Thane district on the Central Railway (CR) route. According to the official, the train was going to Kasara station.

GOOGLE DRIVE TO DELETE TRASHED FILES: Just like Gmail, Google will now keep your trashed files in its Drive platform for only 30 days and start deleting those once the deadline is crossed, starting October 13. Currently, Google Drive keeps all files, including the trashed ones, indefinitely.

LADY GAGA SPEAKS OUT AGAINST RACISM: Musician Lady Gaga in a recent interview spoke out against racism and termed "white supremacy" a poison. According to Fox News, in the interview with Billboard magazine, the 34-year-old singer also criticised people who indulge in social media activism but fail to participate in the change that America needs. "When you're born in this country, we all drink the poison that is white supremacy. I am in the process of learning and unlearning things I've been taught my whole life," Fox News quoted Lady Gaga as saying to the Billboard magazine.

SEARCH, CHROME AND GMAIL ON IOS 14: Google has given its users easier access to Search, Chrome and Gmail on the new Apple iOS 14. The users can now add a Google Search Widget to their Home Screen to let them find information even faster. "You can also set Chrome as your default browser app on your iPhone or iPad, and in the coming days, you'll be able to set Gmail as your default email app," Luke Wroblewski, Director, iOS at Google, said. In iOS 14, Google users can add Widgets to their Home Screen to access apps more quickly or get information at a glance.

HOMES DESTROYED AFTER WINDS PUSH CALIFORNIA FIRE: Homes were destroyed by an unrelenting wildfire that reached a Mojave Desert community and was still growing on several fronts after burning for nearly two weeks in mountains northeast of Los Angeles. Officials were investigating the death of a firefighter on the lines of another Southern California wildfire that erupted earlier this month from a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used by a couple to reveal their baby's gender.

TERROR SUSPECTS FROM KERALA, WEST BENGAL HELD: India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) busted terror group Al-Qaeda’s modules in Murshidabad, West Bengal and Ernakulam, Kerala and arrested nine suspects on Saturday. The NIA conducted simultaneous raids at multiple locations in Ernakulam and Murshidabad early Saturday in which nine arrests were made, six from West Bengal and three from Kerala, according to the agency.

WOMAN GANG-RAPED IN RAJASTHAN, INDIA: A 45-year-old woman was gang-raped in the Indian state of Rajasthan. "A married woman was going with her nephew to give someone money on credit. When they were returning after giving money, they were stopped by six persons. They misbehaved with the woman and assaulted her nephew. They held them captive after which one person raped the woman while others sexually assaulted her. They also made a video and circulated it on social media," District Superintend of Police Tijara, Kushal Singh said. "The victim narrated her ordeal to her husband and then a complaint was lodged with the police. Out of the six accused, two have been arrested so far," he said.

INDIA OVERTAKES US IN COVID RECOVERIES: India has overtaken the United States to register the highest number of COVID-19 recoveries in the world, informed Union Health Ministry on Saturday. The total recoveries in the country crossed 42 lakh. "India overtakes the US and becomes No.1 in terms of global COVID-19 RECOVERIES. TOTAL RECOVERIES cross 42 lakh," the ministry tweeted.

TRUMP SAYS US MOURNS 'TITAN OF THE LAW' GINSBURG: US President Donald Trump on Friday hailed the late US Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a "titan of the law" whose legal expertise and historic decisions inspired generations of Americans. "Today, our nation mourns the loss of a titan of the law" who was "renowned for her brilliant mind and her powerful dissents at the Supreme Court," Trump said in a statement. Earlier in the evening, in learning of the liberal icon's death while he was on the campaign trail, Trump paid tribute to the "amazing life" of the 87-year-old justice.

PERU PRESIDENT VIZCARRA SURVIVES IMPEACHMENT VOTE: Peru's President Martin Vizcarra survived an impeachment vote in Congress as his opponents failed to win the votes necessary to remove him from power. Congress had voted last week to open impeachment proceedings against the 57-year-old president for "moral incapacity" over accusations he incited aides to lie to anti-graft investigators.
