No one can say that the Milan derby was slow on Tuesday night. Ex-teammates Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku butted heads - literally - during the Copa Italia quarter-final clash, earning both of yellow cards before the end of the first half.

As their teammates attempted to separate the players and break up the fight, AC Milan’s Ibrahimovic and Inter Milan’s Lukaku exchanged serious insults, some of which were audible due to the empty San Siro stadium.

"He wants to talk about mothers? Son of a [expletive],” Lukaku was reported as saying by Metro UK. While there is no official confirmation of the verbiage of the two players’ insults, some of it was picked up by the microphones, as commentators scrambled to speak over the expletive-laden exchange in an attempt to keep the television broadcast clean.

The fight turned personal as vicious attacks were made. It continued in the tunnel at half-time and refused to die down.

Ibra was sent off in the second half for picking up a second yellow card. He walked off the pitch at the 58th minute and potentially cost his team the game.

The match ended in a 2-1 result to Inter Milan, who secured their win late in the game. A penalty from Lukaku in the 71st minute equalised Ibra’s game-opening goal, while Christian Eriksen netted the winning goal in extra time (90+7).

According to AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli, Ibra apologized for picking up a red and leaving his team out to dry. ““He apologised like the great champion he is,” Pioli said. “He got a bit caught up in the desire to help the team. It wasn’t easy to stay in the game a man down. The pressure from Inter was strong.”
