Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Thursday congratulated Iraqi artist Dia Al Azzawi on winning the Great Arab Minds Award in literature and art.

On his X account, Sheikh Mohammed said: “We extend our congratulations to the renowned Iraqi artist Dia Al Azzawi, the winner of the ‘Great Arab Minds’ Award in the Literature and Art category. Inspired by the rich heritage of Mesopotamia, Al Azzawi has created exceptional artworks showcased in the world’s most prominent museums and exhibitions."

He added: "His pieces delved into Arab humanitarian issues, blending calligraphy, poetry, and heritage into a contemporary artistic style. We congratulate artist Dia Al Azzawi and celebrate his creative artworks that have inspired generations, elevating Arab art into a powerful and influential global message.”

Recognised as one of the pioneers of modern Arab art, London-based Al Azzawi’s body of work spans over four decades. Born in 1939, in Baghdad, Iraq, Al Azzawi’s art draws inspiration from his homeland, and covers a range of subjects executed in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, prints, drawings, and book art.

Al Azzawi started his artistic career in 1964, after graduating from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad and completing a degree in archaeology from Baghdad University in 1962. His studies of ancient civilizations and Iraqi heritage have had a profound impact on his art.
