ABU DHABI: As the UAE marks the World Water Day on September 2, Sustainable City in Dubai has a lot of celebrate. Water consumption in the mixed-use development on Al Qudra road is half of what it is in the UAE.
Compared to the country’s average of 380 litres, water consumption in the Sustainable City is just 190 litres per day per person.
Spread over 46 hectares, Sustainable City is home to 500 villas and 89 apartments, all of which are equipped with water saving devices. “Every bathroom in these units has low-flow shower heads, tap aerators and half tank flush option,” said Karim El-Jisr, executive director, Diamond Developers, which is behind the city’s first net zero development.
With the average person flushing five times a day, toilets make up about 31 per cent of overall household water consumption.
El Jisr said they are looking to reduce water wastage even further. “Our per capita water consumption is 190 litres which is half of the country’s per capita consumption. We intend to bring down this to 150 litres per head.”
As part of World Water Week, Sustainable City and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) have collaborated with an NGO called Surge to raise awareness about water conservation among students. The awareness campaign will run across 24 schools.
