Don't view 'Mallus' with prejudice
'Mallus' are not a new phenomenon ("Lungi news: fast and sometimes reliable", Gulf News, September 22). They are well read, even a person you see in a grocery store or a delivery boy may have a master's degree in science, literature or politics. They work hard and adjust in any tough situation but retain their humanity. I would request people to please realise this rather than just take a superficial view of them.

True love
The man is truly blessed to have Bhavna as his wife, who's willing to give not only love and devotion but also her life ("Become an organ donor and give the gift of life", Gulf News, September 24). I really adore their love for each other.

Involving everybody
I hope that the man gets well soon. Regarding organ transplant, it's a complex topic, and there are many issues involved. In order to establish a continuous programme here in the UAE, important resources should be provided. Therefore, involvement of all healthcare authorities in managing the programme is critically important, or the sought benefit will be lost.

Conserve water
We are all well aware of global warming starting to take its toll in different parts of the world ("Emergency water reserves on the decline", Gulf News, September 22). Scientists and experts have warned that we are approaching a generation who will value a drop of water more than gold. Now, for our future's welfare, authorities have to come up with some ideas to combat this. Strict measures should be implemented, such as charging depending on use and an increase in the present price should be considered. As all the commodities in the market shoot up, then why not the natural resources when it is reaching a dangerous level of depletion?

A good victory
India's victory against Australia in Durban should be applauded ("India and Pakistan to clash in Twenty20 World Cup final", Gulf News, September 22). After the three consecutive victories India came to the finals against Pakistan, which was played at Johannesburg. Yuvraj Singh's brilliant 70 runs added to India's comfortable score of 188 runs. Captain Dhoni and Robin Uthappa also played well. Australia's Hayden brought their team's score to 173. His strokes and sixers are worth mentioning. The Australian's team spirit is to be appreciated.

Now it is Iran
In the name of searching and destroying weapons of mass destruction, US-led European forces have destroyed, destabilised and dismantled the entire nation of Iraq through mass killings of thousands of innocent people. Now they've turned their eyes towards Iran using the same excuse - atomic threat. Every nation has a right to acquire and produce weapons for their self-defence. Nevertheless, it is time for all the Middle East and GCC countries to prevent invasions and help bring permanent peace to the region.

Female drivers
I have faced a lot of problems mainly with female drivers who do not seem to know the roads very well ("Danger drivers put lives at risk", Gulf News, September 24).

Many violations
Exceeding the specified speed limits, not maintaining enough of a safe distance from vehicles ahead, changing the lanes without using indicators and changing lanes at the last moment are the major traffic violations, which I have been seeing almost every day.

Impatient drivers
The other day I was reversing, there was no one behind me when I started. The next thing I knew another car had come up behind my car and the driver was honking because he needed the parking space and could not wait another 10 seconds for me to finish.

Pedestrian safety
Most drivers in the UAE do not care about pedestrians. In fact, they increase their speed the moment they see someone crossing the street.

Patrolling areas
I had a minor accident last Tuesday on the way to work, while coming off Business Bay Bridge travelling towards Al Garhoud. There was a lot of traffic and another driver tried cutting in front of me causing us to collide. We waited almost three hours for the police to arrive. Vans and trucks are the worst and I sometimes see them breaking the law. I think police patrol vehicles should be inspecting these stressful areas more often.

Transportation
The basic transportation-planning objective to adopt tolls in any congested city is to take travellers out of their private automobiles and shift them to public transit instead. In absence of any efficient and widespread public transit network system in Dubai, Salik is currently shifting some of the motorists from shorter routes to longer routes, which are not even designed to accommodate the diverted travel demand. Therefore causing more overall traffic for Dubai, higher vehicle kilometre travelled (VKT), more energy consumption and pollution.

Rental strategies
Rent should be reduced by at least 50 to 60 per cent. Tenancy contracts should be for three to five years with a maximum of five to seven per cent rental cap. We love Dubai and have good faith in the authorities and in the Real Estate Regulatory Authority to stop this unrealistic increase in rent year after year, which is almost 200 to 300 per cent of what it was two years ago. We want to stay and live here in Dubai, not to go off and look for somewhere else to live because of such high costs.

Savings
Most people have the good intention of saving some money while working overseas. A foreign assignment usually entails improved employment conditions and pay, so the prudent investor will take advantage of this opportunity to save some money. Sometimes this objective is over-looked and indeed forgotten altogether, so many expatriate workers return home wealthy only in memories of the good times they had while overseas. Many regret failing in their primary purpose for working aboard - to save some money. The important issue is to employ some discipline so that saving becomes a natural habit.
