It’s that time of year when the capital of the United Arab Emirates gears up for the most thrilling race season in the region, as the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix returns in full swing. Racers from across the globe arrived in the country, driven by high hopes and big ambitions for the season. Among them is Formula 1 champion Sergio Perez who radiates confidence and determination as we sit down for an exclusive interview ahead of an adrenaline-fueled weekend at Yas Marina Circuit.
Amid preparations for the big event, Perez reflects on standout moments in his career and shares his aspirations for the future, coinciding with the launch of the highly anticipated TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Oracle Red Bull Racing. A celebration of 20 years of high-speed racing, this limited-edition timepiece boldly stands out in TAG Heuer's collection. How did your passion for racing ignite?
My family has always been deeply involved in racing. My dad worked for the Mexican driver Adrian Fernandez, and my brother was also into motorsport. It felt like an automatic thing for us—it’s in our blood.
What was your journey like to make it to Formula One?
It was amazing but incredibly challenging. Moving to Europe at 15 was a huge step. Back then, there was no social media or easy communication. Calls to Mexico were expensive, and I was entirely on my own. Surviving those tough years and eventually achieving my dream of reaching Formula One are things I’m most proud of.
What are some of the moments of pride in your career journey?
Honestly, all of them. Having 12 years in such a competitive sport says a lot. Winning in Formula One is a massive achievement, and every team win is a special moment I treasure.
What makes your experience with Oracle Red Bull Racing unique?
The passion for perfection. At Red Bull, second place is considered a bad weekend. The team constantly pushes to improve, even after a win. It’s a level of commitment and drive I hadn’t experienced with other teams.
What does it mean to be the ambassador of TAG Heuer for all these years, and how do you represent the brand’s values in your own way?
It’s a great privilege. TAG Heuer and I share similar values—a passion for excellence and pushing boundaries. Representing such a historic brand has been incredible, and I’ve been fortunate to work with them since my McLaren days and now with Red Bull. The shared passion for racing and excellence are values I embody both on and off the track.
How has this partnership with TAG Heuer contributed to your personal and professional growth?
It’s inspiring to be associated with a brand that consistently pushes boundaries and strives for excellence. This alignment drives me to uphold those same standards in my career.
How does TAG Heuer’s slogan, “Don’t crack under pressure,” resonate with you?
It resonates deeply. In our sport, we’re under immense pressure every single weekend. Staying composed and performing is essential. Formula One isn’t for everyone—you have to thrive under pressure to succeed.
What was behind winning your first-ever Grand Prix in 2020 in Bahrain, and how have you built on this?
That race was extraordinary. I got hit on lap one and dropped to last place, but I managed to come back and win. Going from last to first was incredible. It was both a relief and a moment of validation for all the hard work.
What is your favorite timepiece and why?
My favorite is the Monaco. I received it when I won my first race in Monaco, and it has the date engraved on the back, making it deeply personal and meaningful. Its bold square case, distinctive design, and rich history in motorsport add to its allure. It’s not just a watch but a symbol of one of the most significant moments in my career—a true piece of my story.
What are your aspirations for this year’s race?
I want to finish the year on a high note. It hasn’t been a straightforward season, but I’m hopeful we can pull everything together for a strong finish.
