In Milan, behind the Art Deco facade of Villa Mozart, lies Serapian—a leather atelier with a quiet allure, known for its dedication to refined Italian craftsmanship since 1928. Founded by Stefano Serapian, this Maison has woven a legacy of artistry that speaks softly yet resonates with those who appreciate its understated luxury. Now, as it unveils its Autumn/Winter 2024 collection, Serapian invites us to explore a journey that connects the rich heritage of Milan with the unique cultural resonance of Tokyo.

This season, Serapian opens a new flagship store in Tokyo’s Ginza district, designed to evoke the ambiance of an Italian villa, blending classic Milanese aesthetics with Japanese minimalism. The space is a tribute to Milan’s embrace of the modern within its historical roots, presenting artfully crafted mosaics and bespoke furnishings. To celebrate the connection between Milan and Tokyo, the Maison collaborated with Chiso, Japan’s oldest kimono-maker, known for crafting exquisite textiles since 1555. Chiso created three exclusive “Oneiric Flowers” designs for Serapian, combining Italian and Japanese flora on silk linings and foulards. These motifs infuse Serapian’s creations with a rare, cross-cultural beauty.

At Villa Mozart, Serapian’s Milan Fashion Week presentation features the new collection surrounded by floral installations by Japanese artist Satoshi Kawamoto, who brings the lushness of Italian and Japanese gardens indoors. His displays of foliage and flowers transform the Villa into a living artwork that captures the essence of natural harmony between the two cultures. Further enhancing the Italian-Japanese dialogue, pieces from Rossana Orlandi’s gallery and origami-inspired plinths made from sustainable cardboard reflect the modern textures and tones of Serapian’s designs.

Central to Serapian’s allure is its innovative Mosaico technique, developed in 1947. This intricate weaving of slender nappa leather strips creates striking patterns and textures, from classic black and white to vibrant, gradient shades—a hallmark that continues to evolve in this season’s collection. For Autumn/Winter 2024, Serapian has elevated this signature craft, experimenting with materials like nappa and suede, exotic leathers, and Italian wool to produce bags that balance utility and beauty with remarkable subtlety.

The season’s standout piece is the Anì Bag, inspired by a classic travel bag from Serapian’s archives. Named after the wife of the founder’s son, it’s a compact yet functional design that reimagines traditional Italian style for modern life. Thoughtfully structured, the Anì Bag complements both casual and formal settings, embodying a timeless aesthetic that suits Serapian’s commitment to craft.

Beyond its distinctive designs, Serapian remains a testament to Milan’s quiet sophistication, a Maison that speaks volumes without relying on logos or overt branding. Its pieces, including the limited-edition creations with Chiso silk, offer a narrative that’s both personal and rare—crafted for those who understand that true luxury lies in the details and the legacy behind them. Villa Mozart remains Serapian’s symbol, where tradition meets innovation, inviting a global audience to experience Milan’s finest secrets.
