Dubai: An analysis of grocery prices over the last three months showed that almost every vegetable got cheaper halfway through any week, particularly most Tuesdays, while fruits were observed to be more cost-effective just as the week was about to end!
Fruits get more cost-effective on weekends
If you were wondering which day of the week would be best to pick up fruits at a cheaper-than-usual rate, in the past months it was observed that the price of most fruits, be it any variant, would mostly get pricier at the start of the week, making the weekend an ideal time to go shopping for fruits, before the price hike sets in!
A trend was observed wherein the price of bananas started getting cheaper around mid-week and the cheapest during the weekend, so did oranges. The per kilogram cost of lemons stayed largely in check the past few months. So, that would be good news for those who are looking for cost-effective days to shop for citrus fruits!
A similar pattern arose when analysing the cost of apples and lime, which fell slightly towards the end of the week and got comparatively pricier at the start of the week, particularly on Sunday and Monday.
Keep in mind that, as always, the prices did not differ starkly and during most of August, September and October, the cost of fruits like bananas, apples, and citric fruits like oranges, lemon and lime, all on average stayed largely in check.
However, for those fruits that fluctuated, namely bananas, oranges and apples, prices were seen higher at the start of the week on Sunday, and it got cheaper towards the end of the week. Again, proving that the weekend is a great time to shop for fruits!
Most veggies get cheap mid-week!
When it comes to vegetables, prices of items like tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers and lettuce were mostly seen dropping mid-week in the last 15 or so weeks, or almost four months.
The cost of onions, another common household staple, generally stays the same all through most months and prices are currently comparatively higher than usual at Dh2.5 per-kilogram, compared to the usual price of Dh1.9 per-kilogram. However, this would still be received as good news for people looking to plan their grocery costs ahead, as costs had largely spiked to Dh3 per kilogram at the start of each week last month, before dropping mid-week.
As a key takeway, during the months of August, September and October, the cost of most vegetables spiked at the start of the week, backing a pattern that mid-week is the perfect time to get some vegetables shopping done!
