Pakistan’s legendary singer and former actress Noor Jehan, the ‘Mallika-e-Tarannum’ of Pakistan died in Karachi of a heart attack. She was 74. Pakistan’s most famous songstress died after a protracted illness, fighting cardiac and kidney ailments that had plagued her for more than 11 years. She was diagnosed with heart complications in 1989 when she was still a hugely popular singer. She began her film career as a child star in the 1940s. The stunningly beautiful singer actress soon became a major hit and paired opposite the major stars of the time. She moved to Pakistan after the partition of India where she dominated the film and television scene for over 40 years. She was lionised for her patriotic songs during the Indo-Pakistan wars and has recorded over 30,000 songs. Twice married, she is survived by six children and several grandchildren. The deceased is to be buried in a graveyard in Karachi. Filming on movie sets was cancelled in the city of Lahore.
